Urinary Catheters Market Growing at 5% CAGR to 2019

Publish Time: 2017-09-11     Origin: Site

The Global Urinary Catheters market is divided into three segments based on product type: Foley Catheters, Intermittent Catheters, and Male External Catheters. Urinary catheters are devices used to drain out urine, this is called catheterization. The materials of the urinary catheter are latex, polyurethane, or silicone.

They are mainly used in patients who have medical conditions such as urinary incontinence and retention, multiple sclerosis, spina-bifida, dementia, and temporarily post-surgery of prostate or genitals.

The global urinary catheters market has been displaying steady growth and it is expected to continue doing so going forward too. The growth of this market is mainly driven by the development of medical devices industry, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries. The other factors responsible for the growth of the market include rising geriatric population, increasing prevalence of urinary incontinence, and increasing awareness towards health and hygiene in developing countries. According to a report by WHO, approximately 200 million people worldwide suffer from some form of urological disorder that requires urinary catheterization. Analysts forecast Global Urinary Catheters market to grow at a CAGR of 5.23% over the period 2015-2019.

Because of rising occurrence of target diseases like urinary incontinence, bladder obstruction, urinary retention, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and bladder cancers, the market of the urinary Catheters is experiencing growth. Neurological disorders, such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, and others that lead to bladder dysfunction also require these catheters for urine drainage. The growing elderly population being more prone to such conditions is also contributing to the market growth.

A Foley catheter is a flexible tube which a clinician passes through the urethra and into the bladder to drain urine. It is the most common type of indwelling urinary catheter. It comprises a balloon that holds the catheter tube in the bladder for long-term catheterization, whereas an intermittent catheter is for short-term self- catheterization. Both these urinary catheters are inserted into the urethra, guided through the bladder; Intermittent catheters are also called Nelaton, Robinson or in/out catheters. There are several types available with different features designed to make intermittent catheterization easier depending on your circumstances. External Catheters, also commonly referred to as condom catheters or male catheters, are used by men to treat urinary incontinence. This type of catheter consists of a flexible sheath that slides over the penis just like a condom. Many men find external catheters to be a great alternative to more invasive catheters, such as indwelling catheters that require insertion through the urethra. In addition to being a great alternative, the condom catheter is incredibly easy and straightforward to use, since it is simply rolled onto the penis. Generally speaking, an external catheter affixes to the penis by an adhesive.

Compared to the above two catheters, for male external catheters, there is no need to insert catheters into the urethra reducing the rate of CAUTI with advanced catheters.
